A vascular/venous access device (30) is comprised of a needle cannula (32) disposed within the central bore (44) at the distal end (28) of a catheter (34). The distal end (36) of the needle cannula (32) extends outwardly from the central bore (44) at the distal end (28) of the catheter (34) and the proximal end (38) of the needle (32) exits the central bore (44) of the catheter (34) through an aperture or slit (48) formed in the wall of the catheter (34). A gripping member (52) selectively holds the needle cannula (32) in place within the bore (44) of the catheter (34) during insertion of the needle cannula (32) and catheter (34) into a patient's vascular system. After entry into the vascular system, the needle cannula (32) is withdrawn from the catheter (34) sidewall and any desired length of the catheter (34) may then be advanced into the vascular system. The catheter includes a relatively rigid end portion (46).
|
