The road traffic warning sign system has a number of symbol display panels (5-7) that are mounted on a gantry that bridges the road. Each of the display panels has a pattern of output points for the ends of optical fiber conductors. A number of different symbol patterns can be represented in each location using different fibre optic conductor bundles each served by a specific light source. A control unit with decoding functions allows the required symbol pattern to be selected in this way the symbol patterns are already available as defined by the connection pattern.
