The method is characterized by (i) hydrolyzing AlN powder added to water or water-mixed organic solvent, pref. at 20-100 deg.C for 1-24 hour; (ii) heating the hydrolyzed powder to obtain a single phase AlON at 1,650-1,800 deg.C for 0.5-4 hours; and (iii) press-forming the AlON powder either with or without addition of an auxiliary binder Y2O3, to sinter at 1,700-2,100 deg.C. The sintered body has the improved physical properties and permeability.
