<p>Bioerodible poly(orthoesters) and poly(orthocarbonates) with acid catalysts bound to the molecular structure of the polymers by a bond that is susceptible to hydrolysis are treated with a solution of hydroxyl ion in a nonaqueous, non-hydrolyzing solvent, to dissociate the bound acid without harmful effect to the polymer. The resulting polymer, which may be used as a sustained-release delivery vehicle for drugs and other beneficial agents, is substantially more stable at room temperature and has a more prolonged bioerosion profile which provides greater reproducibility to the efficacy of the drug formulation.</p> |
