The shock absorber has a damping cylinder filled with the hydraulic fluid, divided by a piston (3) into two cylinder spaces. The piston rod (2) and the damping cylinder are respectively coupled to the vehicle chassis and the wheel mounting via couplings (4, 19) having an outer ring and a rubber/metal sleeve. The outer ring of each coupling has a bore communicating with the interior of the damping cylinder or the hollow interior of the piston rod for passage of electrical leads for one or more sensors or valves coupled to an evaluation and/or control circuit, via a second bore with an associated plug or socket coupling. ADVANTAGE - Simple connection of valve control or sensor leads to associated circuit, with protection of leads from mechanical damage.
