The production line includes a first trolley (5) which is fitted with a claw to hold the work piece (1). The first trolley includes an opto-electric sensor for measuring the length of the work piece before moving it from an upstream position to an intermediate work station (16) to, for example, trim the piece into sections. The trolley then proceeds to feed the work piece, in turn, to a first set of machining stations (17-19). A second trolley (6) takes the trimmed and part machined pieces and conveys them to further work stations (20-22). The second trolley then moves them to the downstream end of the line. A computer controls displacement of the two trolleys and work station functions from programs and data such as the measured length of the work piece. ADVANTAGE - Increases productivity of production line by providing for initial measurement of work piece and application of supplementary operations.
