The packaging material has inflatable pockets, filled with air for altering its size, to ensure that the packaged items are securely held in place. The filling of the pockets is pref. effected via an air pump. Pref. the packaging material comprises a number of mattresses, fitting on all sides of the packaged object and hinged together, so that when the pockets are inflated it forms a rigid structure. ADVANTAGE - Eliminates need for environmentally damaging loose packaging material. Packaging takes up little space in its inactive form, i.e. containing no air.
