1347065 Article lifting grips SVENSKA CELLULOSA AB 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 23602/71 Heading B8H A device (Fig. 1) for handling bales 3 has members 15 (Fig. 3) movable about pivots 48 for engaging (by hooking under) loops of the bale ties 4. The members 15 are pivotable outwardly against spring action from an inoperative position (full lines Fig. 3) to a bale tie engaging position (broken lines) by the action of flexible members 6. These are reeved round pulleys 21, 22, and 14, and are connected to a mounting 46 which is universally connected to an actuating rod 1 slidable in a tubular housing 2. The extended position of the rod 1 is shown in dotdash-lines in Fig. 2 (not shown). In this position, the members 6 are extended so as to pivot the members 15 outwardly into hooking position. When the device is lowered to a surface on which the bale is to be unloaded, the rod 1 moves downwardly in the housing 2 when the bale "grounds" on the surface. The rod 1 is retained in its retracted position by the action of a dog 5 (Fig. 4) which is pivotally mounted at 31 on the rod 1 and is spring-urged into a recess in the housing 2 (as shown in dot-dash lines). This is permitted to occur because a toothed wheel 8, rotatably mounted on the rod 1, engages, and is thereby rotated by, a member 9. The members 15 are spring-urged to their inward (non- hooking) positions due to the retraction of the flexible members 6. When the rod 1 is moving downwardly relative to the housing 2, it engages inwardly projecting stops 32 (Fig. 5) each of which is connected via spring-urged rod 33, links 57, and a linkage 19 (Fig. 5), so as to lower magnetic heads 17 from a normal position (full lines), to the position shown in dot-dash lines. Thus when the device is lowered on to another load, and the hoist (not shown) from which it is suspended is raised, the heads 17 engage the ties of the straps 4. The member 9 (Fig. 4) is deflected upwardly and permits rotation of the wheel 8. This releases the dog 5 from engagement with the housing 2. The rod 1 is thus able to be lifted up and tensions the members 6. These cause the members 15 to move into hooking position. They are able to hook under the ties because the latter have been drawn upwardly, away from the bale, by the action of the magnetic heads 17. |
