1,143,659. Barrier in agitated fused electrolyte fuel cells. PROTOTECH CO. 29 June, 1966 [4 April, 1966], No. 29118/66. Heading H1B. In a fuel cell having a molten alkali metal hydroxide electrolyte which is agitated near the cathode, as in the cells of Specification 1,114,431, a barrier is interposed between the agitation and the anode, which barrier is permeable to ions of the electrolyte but impervious to the passage of electrolyte and is of dimensions such as to prevent transfer of electrolyte under agitation to the anode. In a modification the cathode itself is the barrier. Suitable barriers may be constructed of e.g. nickel felts or screens or sintered nickel, or of zirconium oxide or aluminium oxide ceramic sheets, or of Ni or A1 screen baskets filled with powdered or granular metal or Al 2 0 3 , ZrO 2 or MgO, or of a porous Al 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 ceramic layer on the anode. In the Figure, fuel is fed to anodes (1), e.g. of Pd foil, in molten NaOH/KOH electrolyte, and air is fed through pipes (7) to agitate the electrolyte near the cathodes (3) made e.g. of Ni (the housing (3<SP>11</SP>) may function as an auxiliary Ni cathode), and the barriers (9) lie in slots in the housing (3<SP>11</SP>). |
