PURPOSE:To produce a cutting tool made of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic having excellent toughness. CONSTITUTION:A cutting tool made of an Al2O3-Zr02 ceramic is produced by the following four principal steps of (a) to (d). (a) Al2O3 powder is compounded with 0.02-2wt.% (based on the whole mixture) of one or more kinds of powdery carbonate, nitrate, chloride or oxide of Ca, Ba or Sr as a growth promoting assistant for acicular Al2O3 crystal in sintering and 0.02-1wt.% of one or more kinds of SiO2 powder or an Si alkoxide; (b) the obtained powdery mixture is heat-treated by keeping at 600-1050 deg.C in oxidizing atmosphere; (c) the heat- treated powdery mixture is compounded with 5-30wt.% of ZrO2 powder and/or stabilized ZrO2 powder and (d) the obtained mixture is formed and sintered. |
