This invention relates to 2-azetidinones of the formula: <IMG> , or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R is <IMG> or <IMG> wherein A1 is a single bond, -NH-?-, -NH- or -NH-NH-?-, A2 is a single bond, -NH-, -CH2-CH2-NH-, or -?-NH-NH-, A3 is a single bond, -CH=CH-, -(CH2)t-, -NH-(CH2)p- or <IMG> wherein t is 1, 2, 3 or 4 and p is 0 or 1, and A4 is a single bond, -CH2-, -NH-CH2-, or -N=CH-; R1 is - <IMG> ; and R4 is <IMG>, <IMG>, <IMG> ; said azetidinones having antibacterial activity.
