The invention relates to the manufacture of new aluminiummagnesium-hydroxy compounds and their use as thickening, thixotropizing, stabilizing and anti-settling agents, e.g. in paints, lacquers, adhesives and cosmetics. The new compounds contain a radical RCOO- of an organic monocarboxylic acid having 2 to 22 carbon atoms and they exhibit a laminar structure.
