A METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LIQUID-CRYSTALLINE ORGANOPOLYSILOXANES The present invention relates to a method for the production of liquid-crystalline organopolysiloxanes which provides for the facile introduction of a mesogenic group without the use of a hydrosilylation reaction. The method comprises (I) contacting a compound having the general formula ROA with an organopolysiloxane containing in each molecule, at least one halomethylphenyl group of the unit formula , in which organopolysiloxane said halomethylphenyl group is bonded directly to the silicon atom, or is bonded to said silicon indirectly via an alkylene group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, wherein R is a monovalent organic group which contains at least one group selected from the groups consisting of (i) substituted monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon groups, (ii) substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon groups, (iii) unsubstituted monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon groups, (iv) unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon groups, and (v) substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic hydrocarbon groups; A is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal; X is a halogen; and x has a value of 0 to 10; and (II) recovering the liquid-crystalline organopolysiloxane. The liquid-crystalline organopolysiloxanes so obtained are useful for the display and recording of optical information. |
