PURPOSE:To ensure the accurate correction of the color variance of the color image by calculating the differential value of the color signal to be smoothed, comparing the differential color signal with a reference level, detecting the evolving width of an edge part image, and calculating the shape feature based on the detected evolving width. CONSTITUTION:An edge detection means 3 detects whether the read image part is identical with an edge part image or not based on the level change of one of three color signals to be inputted. A signal processing means 4 applies the prescribed signal processing to the color signal used by the means 3. A shape feature value calculation means 5 calculates the shape feature value which characterizes the shape of the edge part image with use of the output signal of the means 4 when the edge part image is detected by the means 3. A color variance correction means 6 reproduces the color signal of the part of the edge part image based on the shape feature value calculated by the means 5 and in response to an original image. At the same time, the means 6 corrects the color variance caused at the part of the edge part image on the basis of the reproduced color signals. |
