The cell has monopolar electrodes (2,3) and separate bipolar electrodes (5) arranged in parallel at pre-determined distances (d) in a body with a length:height ratio of 3-5. Soln. (4) circulates continuously between titanium electrodes coated with metallic oxides. For desalination, selective anionic and cationic membranes replace some bipolar electrodes. For hypochlorite prodn., permeable membrances are used to prevent cathodic reduction of hypochlorite. Polarity invesion is used to clean the principal electrodes. A flanged (14) cylindrical cell body (1), with a length:height (19,17) ratio of 3-5 contains monpolar electrodes (2,3) and non-linked bipolar electrodes (5) in a circulating soln. (4) with an inlet (10) and an outlet (11). The cross-sectional flow area in the cell (16) is 50% greater than that of the inlet tube (18). The distance (d) between electrodes depends on the voltage, current density and avoidance of inter-plate heating. Selective or permeable membranes are inserted between the bipolar electrodes to optimise desalination or hypochlorite prodn. USE/ADVANTAGE - For desalination and hypochlorite prodn. High desalination and hypochlorite yields can be obtained in the same basic cell.
