A flexible, nonwoven, absorbent and watertight composite comprises a layer (2) of absorbent and gelling powder enclosed between two nonwoven sheets of natural or synthetic fibres including a rubberised binder, an upper permeable sheet (1) and a lower watertight sheet (3) obtd. by (heat) bonding an impermeable film (6) after assembling the composite by hot calendering. Pref. the powder (2) is a polyacrylate compsn. forming a gel after absorbing liq. On contact with liqs., the powder (2) is antiseptic and/or bactericidal and/or sporicidal and/or fungicidal and/or deodorant. The watertight film (6) is of non-chlorinated polyethylene. USE/ADVANTAGE - The composite has applns. in medicine, in the funeral business, and in recovering oil slicks from the surface of water. The prod. is very thin before contact with liqs. and very light, absorbs liqs. quickly, causes no allergies or toxicity on burning, can be cut cleanly, is totally watertight, degrades or fragments in contact with air or light, and yields energy on destruction by burning. |
