PURPOSE:To provide the lighting device of a high-voltage discharge lamp capable of reducing the loss in the diode of an ignitor to protect the diode when the high-voltage discharge lamp performs a half-wave discharge and accelerating the transition of the high-voltage discharge lamp to a full-wave discharge. CONSTITUTION:The lighting device 1 of a high-voltage discharge lamp 2 connects the high-voltage discharge lamp 2 to the secondary output of an inverter circuit 4, and an ignitor 3 made of a multiple-voltage rectifying/smoothing circuit is connected. The ignitor 3 is connected with a serial circuit of diodes D3-D7 in the same direction between both terminals of the high-voltage discharge lamp 2, and an impedance element Z is inserted between the cathode of the diode D7 and one terminal of the high-voltage discharge lamp 2. When the high-voltage discharge lamp 2 performs a half-wave discharge and charges of the capacitors C5-C8 of the ignitor 3 are discharged, the impedance element Z limits the current flowing in the serial path of the diodes D3-D7 and reduces the loss in the diodes D3-D7. |
