Purification and degassing of molten metal is effected by passing an inert gas in countercurrent and pulsating through the melt while the melt is running through a packing which binds the oxygen contained in the molten metal. Pref. the packing is composed of petroleum coke of 2-8 mm size, and the inert gas may contain some reducing or oxidizing gases, or decomposable cpds. for alloying purposes.
