1,146,693. Water-dilutable epoxy esters. REICHHOLD CHEMIE A.G. 11 March, 1966 [13 March, 1965], No. 10897/66. Heading C3B. [Also in Division C7] Water-dilutable salts of esters of epoxy resins are prepared by reacting together: (a) an epoxy compound or a polyhydric alcohol obtained by the hydrolysis of an epoxy compound, (b) an aromatic, hydroaromatic or aliphatic saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and (c) a polycarboxylic acid which is the adduct of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride with a fatty acid of a semidrying or drying oil, the adduct having been hydrolysed if necessary so as not to contain anhydride groups, and mixing the carboxy ester so formed with sufficient NH 3 and/or strong organic nitrogen base in the presence of water as to render the ester water-dilutable. The epoxy compound or polyhydric alcohol is preferably esterified first with (b) and then with (c). Pigments and water-miscible organic solvents may be added and the aqueous compositions are useful in electrophoretic coating processes, the coatings being cured by baking. |
