Ultrasound is transmitted through an element (4, 41) by local immersion coupling, whereafter a signal (10) containing various data (echoes) on the ultrasonic wave path through the element (4, 41) is acquired, and the time lag (ti) between two echoes and the speed of the ultrasonic wave in the element are deduced therefrom. The thickness of pipes (22) may thereby be measured.
