A biodestructible cellular support for soilless culture is made from a polyurethane binder and powdered pure lignin having a particle size between 1 and 10 microns. The lignin is prepd. by known methods from wood and may be added as a powder, or as a paste with water. The amt. present in the final prod. may vary between 5 and 75% depending upon the final properties sought. The polyurethane is prepd. by reaction of an isocyanate with a polyol, hydroxylated polyester, or caprolactone. If desired, the premix of polyol and lignin may also contain solvents, and additives such as nutrients, insecticides and blowing agents. ADVANTAGE - The prod. has a large absorption capacity, slow water evapn. rate, and being biodestructible by composting, does not cause pollution in disposal. |
