The invention relates to a safety binding for a ski, which is intended to retain, in a releaseable manner, the front end of a boot. The front binding comprises a jaw 10, and a mechanism for elastically returning the jaw 10 into a centred position. It also comprises a compensation mechanism with a feeler (sensor) 13 which is movable vertically in response to the stresses of the boot. A layer of shock-absorbing material 30 is inserted between the upper surface of the feeler 13 and the upper surface of the ski 2. <IMAGE>
