The invention concerns a matrix-array display with a display sheet in which display elements punched out in the form of flaps are disposed in rows and columns and, depending on the display required, can be placed by a positioning device in front of or behind strips with a contrasting colour. A reliable display with a long-lived display sheet is produced by virtue of the fact that the display sheet is held in a rigid frame and the display elements are oriented alternately upwards and downwards from one line to the next and pairs of oppositely oriented display elements carry a strip. At one end, the strips are attached to the positioning device which travels over the display sheet and, depending on the display desired, positions the strips, column by column, in front of or behind the display elements. The other ends of the strips are fixed to a reel from which the strips are unrolled when the display is generated, the strips being taken up again by the reel when the display is erased.
