A step-by-step accumulator conveyer comprises longitudinal bearers 7 which move in a rectangular path to convey articles 1 between seats 2a, 2b ... 2z on fixed side walls 3, 4. In transfer, the articles are engaged by pairs of supports 9, 9<SP>1</SP> pivoted to the bearers 7 and connected by a length of chain 14 or by a slotted rod. A lever 16 adjacent each seat 2 senses the presence or otherwise of an article 1 in the seat. As shown in Fig. 5, with all seats occupied the supports 9 are maintained in their lowered positions when the bearers 7 are raised. With an article absent from seat 2n for example, the associated lever 16 rocks under gravity, the support 9n-1 pivots to its operative raised position, Fig. 7, and due to the chains 14, causes all supports upstream of the support 9n-1 to be similarly raised to their operative positions and all articles upstream of the seat 2n to be advanced one step. For returning all the supports 9 to their lowered inoperative positions, a bell-crank lever (20) connected to the support (9) nearest the feed end of the bearers (7) engages a stationary cam (24) and all these connected supports are lowered, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the articles (1) are rolled from seat to seat after being pushed by supports (9) having projections (12<SP>1</SP>) in place of recesses (12). |
