[Also in Division C3] Useful as sludge-dispersing additives in lubricants and fuels is the reaction product of (A) at least one oil-soluble ester of a mono- or polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol wherein-the carboxylic acid moiety of the ester has at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms exclusive of the carboxyl carbon atoms and the alcohol moiety has up to 40 aliphatic carbon atoms, with (B) at least one acylating reactant selected from mono- and polycarboxylic acids having one to 30 carbon atoms, or anhydrides or acyl halides thereof, or mixtures of two or more of these acylating reactants. Examples disclose natural and synthetic lubricating (e.g. ester, phosphate and silicone base oils) oils, gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuels containing the reaction products of (A) polyisobutenyl-substituted succinic anhydride and pentaerythritol, with (B) maleic anhydride; (A) chlorinated polyisobutylene: acrylic acid and pentaerythritol with (B) acetic anhydride, or N-(2-hydroxyethyl) morpholine with (B) maleic anhydride, or N,N<SP>1</SP>-di-(2- hydroxyethyl) ethylene diamine with (B) maleic anhydride and formic acid, (A) isobutylenepropylene copolymer: chloroacetyl chloride reaction product and mannitol with (B) lauric acid, and (A) chlorinated polyisobutylene: acrylic acid reaction product and sorbitol, posttreated with propylene oxide, with (B) adipic acid.
