The medium comprises (a) a transparent substrate, (b) a recording film and (c) a reflecting film. The film (b) comprises a phthalocyanine dyestuff (I) or a naphthalocyanine dyestuff (II) of the formula (I) and (II). R1-2 = H, OH, alkoxy, or alkyl; R3-6 = opt. substd. alkyl, sulphino, amino or SO3H; q = 0-4; and Me = a metal atom. Pref. q = 1; Me = Si; and R1-2 = OH (IA) or Me (IIA); and R3-6 = SO2NH(CH2)3-NEt2 (IA) or pentyl (IIA). The thickness of the layers is pref. (a) 1.1-1.4mm, (b) 0.03-0.6 microns and (c) 0.03-0.5 micron. The medium may also have a protective film. USE/ADVANTAGE - The meidum is used in LD (laser disc) players (claimed). It may be used for recording an analogue NTSC (National Teleision System Committee) picture signal with a simple semiconductor laser with high C/N ratio and low flicker. In an example, a polycarbonate resin disc (200mm dia. 1.25 mm thick) was spin coated with a soln. of (A) (IA) or (B) alpha, omega, bis, (N-butyl-3,3-dimethyl-benz(e) indol-2-yl)-pentamethin cyanine perchlorate (60 mg/ml in MeOH) to give a 0.2 micron film; and given a 0.1 micron Au coating by vacuum deposition and a 10 micron protective film of UV-cured resin. Recording was with a semiconductor laser ray and 9.3 and 7.6 MHz analogue signals with a power of 4-20 mW. The flicker, C/N ratio and RF amplitude were higher for (A) than (B).
