The two latches (1) are each attached at one end to the centre section of the reel (2). The free ends of the latches are kept open on the spool by means of either a hairpin spring or leaf spring. After casting the line presses against the free ends of the latches, pressing them against the action of the springs in towards the centre hub of the reel, and requires much less strength then overcoming the friction on a conventional reel. Also the original contact surface is reduced so that there is less frictional loss. USE/ADVANTAGE - Greater width of fishing cast with no increase in weight.
