The O-ring (1) is assembled with the aid of a mandrel (3) held in three carrier arms (2) spaced along its length. The upper carrier arm has a channel (8) along which O-rings (1) can be fed to a nest (7) over the tapered end of the mandrel. A slide (4) with a wiper spring (19) and carrier arm spreaders (24) can be moved downwards to expand the O-ring and move it along the mandrel. The carrier arms are split into two halves (10) which can be pushed apart against spring pressure by the passage of the spreaders (24). The O-ring is pushed past the end of the mandrel into the groove (15) of the workpiece (14). The workpiece is held in the recessed end of the mandrel by a handling robot. ADVANTAGE - Simple mechanism. O-ring is not overstretched.
