A filter element has a permeable porous, substantially dimensionally stable moulded body (22). The moulded body is mainly composed of polyethylene particles (26). The particles are at least in part ultra-high molecular polyethylene particles (24) with such a grain size distribution that the size of at least 99 % by weight of the grains lies in the 63 to 250 mu m range, or the size of at least 60 % of the grains lies in the 63 to 250 mu m range, or the size of at least 60 % of the grains lies in the 125 to 250 mu m range, or, when no other polyethylene particles are present, the size of at least 70 % of the grains lies in the 63 to 315 mu m range. The surface pores (36) of the filter element are filled with a finely granulated material (32).
