The rear wall of the fitting chute is formed as a pre-compression plate (15). The plate is driven towards the front wall (14) of the chute by a hydraulic cylinder and scissors mechanism (19,22), thereby pre-compressing and reducing the volume of the walls material before it is admitted to the baling chamber. Pre-compression takes place during the working stroke of the press ram (5). Fastened to the rear of the ram head is a plate (12) which acts as a shutter preventing waste material from falling into the space behind the ram. The return stroke of the ram does not extend the full width of the filling chute but only as far as the pre-compressed width of the waste material. ADVANTAGE - Improves press performance and utilization.
