The image forming appts. includes a process unit (6) mounted detachably at a predetermined position, where the unit includes an electrostatographic material, a cleaning device (18) and a cover. The cover member (14) can be positioned to cover a cleaning blade and part of a photoreceptor. The cleaning blade (30) is free to move between an operative position in contact with the photoreceptor, and a non-operative position away from it. The blade is elastically biassed towards the operative position by a spring. A forcing device holds the blade in the non-operative position when the cover is closed.
