<p>Disclosed are new fuel components (10) for smoking articles such as cigarettes, which contain an extruded fuel element composition (12), the outer surface of which is circumscribed with a compressible, resilient layer of material (15) adhered to the longitudinal surface of the extruded composition, wherein the extruded composition comprises a carbonaceous material cut to pieces with the lengths from about 12 to 16 mm; and wherein the resilient layer comprises a gathered web of treated paper. Fuel components for smoking articles are formed by continuously extruding a composition to form a preselected shape, circumscribing the continuously extruded composition with a layer of material to form a wrapped rod or composite member. Also disclosed is an apparatus for making the fuel components contains a control device to the control the linear speed of the extruded composition (12) which is situated in between a wrapping and cutting device (100) and extruder (50, 80).</p> |
