<p>PURPOSE:To highly selectively produce the subject derivative useful as an intermediate for synthesis of various kinds of fine chemicals via a general reaction by reacting a specified unsaturated lactone derivative with a carbonyl compound in the presence of a nickel catalyst and zinc. CONSTITUTION:A lactone derivative (e.g. alpha-angelica lactone) represented by formula I [R<1> and R<4> are each H, a 1 to 8C alkyl or a (substituted)aryl] is stirred together with a carbonyl compound (e.g. benzaldehyde) in the presence of a nickel catalyst [e.g. biscyclooctadienylnickel (0)], zinc, triphenylphosphine, etc., in a solvent such as dioxane at 60 deg.C for 12 to 15hr in an atmosphere of argon. The reaction mixture is subsequently extracted with ether and the resultant extract is washed and dried. After removal of ether, purification is carried out by column chromatography, thus giving the objective butenolide derivative [e.g. 4-acetyl-2-(5H)-furanone] represented by formula II [R<2> is a 1 to 8C alkyl or a (substituted)aryl; R<3> is of same kind as R<1>].</p> |
