PURPOSE:To provide a new phenylpyrimidinylpyridine compound useful as a component of a liquid crystal material having broad Sc phase and realizing quick response. CONSTITUTION:The phenylpyrimidinylpyridine compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl or alkoxy), e.g. 5-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)-2-(5-nonyl-2-pyridyl)-pyrimidine. The phenylpyrimidinylpyridine compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting an amidine hydrochloride of formula II derived from a 2- substituted-5-cyanopyridine with an iminium salt of formula III derived from a 4-substituted-acetophenone. A liquid crystal composition having high practicability can be produced by using the compound of formula I in combination with a liquid crystal material. |
