The screw of a screw mixer, see Fig. 3, has a perforated helical partition 12 arranged between its lands 10 in a mixing zone of the mixer, the arrangement being such that the radial distance between it and the screw core 9 and between it and the inner wall of the mixel housing 3 varies longitudinally and/or peripherally of the screw. The lands may not be integral with the screw core in the mixing zone, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The screw cores in the feed and mixing zones of the mixer may be separate and independently rotatable. In a modification, see Fig. 9, a central screw 22 is surrounded in the mixing zone by an outer screw 23 having a perforated helical partition of the type described arranged between its lands 24. The hand of the outer screw may be the same or opposite to that of the central screw. In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a first screw is provided with a conical extension having a perforated partition of the kind described between its lands, a mixing zone of the mixer, and a second screw is arranged to rotate within the conical extension, preferably in an opposite direction to that of the first screw. The perforations in the helical partition may be in the form of circular holes or rectangular slots, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). |
