The carrier consists of an elongated support (2) which can be moved between a transport position, in which it rests on the vehicle roof, and a loading/unloading position, with one end on or just above the ground. The carrier is moved between the two positions by a rigid arm (5) which pivots about a transverse axis (6) by use of a two-way hydraulic cylinder (8). The cylinder has one end fixed relative to the roof of the vehicle and the other connected to the arm (5). The drive can be in the form of an electric motor and reduction gear system. When one end of the carrier is raised or lowered by the drive its other end slides relative to the roof by means of rollers (11) engaging with guides (3) at the sides of the carrier. ADVANTAGE - More convenient to use, with reduced manual labour requirement.
