Container for waste materials, e.g. used medical syringes, consists of a body (2) with a cover (3) for its open top (4), which has an aperture (7) for filling it and a lid (8) (7') which can be sealed. The cover (3) fits over the top of the container and is held in place by a locking mechanism (5,8,12) so that it cannot open spontaneously. The locking mechanism comprises a thick edge along the top of the body and a flange (5) along the side of the cover which engages with it. The container can be fitted, for example, to a base (13) from which it can be removed by rotating it with one hand. ADVANTAGE - More reliable storage of used syringes, eliminating risk of contamination.
