A toy having a simple and sturdy construction, wherein a pen (52) or another movable member is moved over a drawing surface (51) by controlling its position with two movable perpendicular rods (11, 12) which the user moves translationally on a holder. An outer frame (4) of the holder contains indexing members provided with notches defining a series of fixed positions for each movable rod (11, 12). Said positions are marked by a scale (35) enabling a drawing to be predefined according to coordinates and gradually completed by the user. In a preferred embodiment, the rods (11, 12) and the pen (52) are located above the drawing surface (51). Said drawing surface may be a magnetic slate, in which case the pen (52) is a magnetic nib.
