A system to suppress essentially periodic sound emanating from a sound source comprises: at least one transducer (sensor) such as a vibration sensor or a microphone, linked to the sound source to transmit mechanical or acoustic vibrations; a computer with a program; and a loudspeaker system controlled by the computer and directed at the sound source. The computer receives signals from the transducer, analyses these signals in order to derive relevant information therefrom, such as frequencies, spectral compositions, repeat rates and (relative) levels, and on the basis of the result thereof drives the loudspeaker system in such a way that this generates a sound at location of the sound source, at least important components of which sound have substantially the same intensity as the sound emitted by the source and are of opposite phase in respect thereto.
