The spreader consists of a bottomless container or box (2), generally prismatic in shape and equipped with guides (4) which engage with the sides of the bricks in the course below. The box is filled with mortar and moved along the top of the course of bricks with the aid of handles (3), leaving behind a layer (8) of mortar which is dispensed through an outlet (7) at the bottom of the container's sloping rear face. The size of the outlet is controlled by a shutter (10) with a slot (13) for a threaded joint (11) fastened by a wingnut (12). The box can be made from any suitable material, preferably of wood. ADVANTAGE - Simple to manufacture and use, spreading even layer of mortar to receive next course of bricks.
