The generator barge has a number of rubber belts (4), each steel plated and running around several horizontal rollers, transversely mounted between two floating hulls (1), anchored (21) and ballasted to obtain water flow (22,23) over the belt, optimally in rivers, just under it. Transverse vanes of reinforced rubber (26), supported on the belt by hinged, curved ribs, stand erect against the flow, but lie flat to the belt on the return side. Flat-linked chains in the belt edges drive toothed wheels geared to generators within the hulls. The electrical output (400MW per belt) is transmitted ashore by cable. Wind (20) and solar (19) generators charge batteries for manoeuvring motors and auxiliaries. Hulls are rigidly interconnected by gangwayed beams (24). USE/ADVANTAGE - Twin-hulled barge (catamaran) for exploiting river flows and triple-hulled barge (trimaran) for exploiting esturial bidirectional flows and off-shore translational wave energy to produce electrical energy which is fed to thermal power station on land via cable.
