In order to provide a system for identifying a particular specimen of a product and for keeping account of it throughout manufacture and distribution, labels are provided on one longi. tudinal section of a continuous label web which is wide enough to provide at least two longitudinal sections, all the sections corresponding to each label being printed with indicia, and the label being severed and applied to the article or container. One of the other longitudinal sections may be successively severed longitudinally from the web and wound up for storage on the machine. One or more of the other longitudinal sections may be severed together with the label and be connected thereto by perforations, and when the label is applied to the article remain attached to the label but not stuck to the article so that it may subsequently be detached to provide a record of the article. As shown a web W is drawn from a roll 32 by rollers 36 into a supply loop 37 from which it is drawn step-bystep by rollers 38 adjacent a cut-off knife 39. A punch (not shown) forms register holes 23 in the web at the corners of tags S and tabs T, and a perforator 40 then perforates the web between the tabs T and labels L. An imprinter 41 controlled by a scanning device 45 prints indicia on each associated label, tab and tag. The scanning device 45 detects the holes 23 and controls the feed rollers 38 to stop the feed each time the terminal label registers with the knife 39. The web is also advanced into registration with a blade 51 which severs the tags from the tabs by cutting the web between adjacent holes 23, the separated strip 62 of tags being wound on a reel 66. The terminal label and associated tabs T are severed from the web and transferred to a label applying drum 70, which is described in Specification 1,178,902. Only the label is stuck to an article, so that the associated tag may be detached by a distributor and retained as a record. |
