The locking system of a door or window is actuated by two rods (17,18). Each rod has an integrally formed toothed rack which meshes with the pins (14) of a gear wheel mounted in a housing (4). The gear wheel is rotated by an attached cylinder lock which is actuated by a key. The rods (17,18) are held in their locked or in their unlocked positions by a horizontal slider (19) which is mounted on a vertically sliding plate (24) fitted inside the housing (4). This vertically sliding plate is spring-loaded and holds the horizontal slider in the disengaged position when the gear wheel is actuated by the rotation of the cylinder lock.
