This invention relates to a detergent composition for automatic dishwashers which is formulated as a gel type aqueous pseudoplastic viscoelastic linear product which has exceptionally good physical stability, little bottle residue, little glass loss and improved cleaning characteristics. Linear pseudoplastic and viscoelastic behaviour is attributed by the incorporation of a thickener of the cross-linked high molecular weight polyacrylic acid type. Potassium to sodium ratios by weight of at least 1/2 minimize the quantity of undissolved solid particles so as to make an additional contribution to stability and pourability. Control of the incorporation of air bubbles has the function of providing the product with a bulk density of from 1.28 to 1.42 g/cm3, which approximately corresponds to the density of the liquid phase. Stearic acid or any other fatty acid or their salts further improve physical stability.
