<p>A moving web (1) is severed once it has been wound up to the desired length by means of crack propagation which is based on fracture mechanics and on lines of perforations which are inserted into the web material, which is made brittle by cooling (8), at the point at which it is to be severed by means of a laser apparatus (9-11).</p>
