An optical disc system uses discs to store such as language dictionaries and biographical reference works. Access to the system is obtained by keyboard entries (11) with an LCD display (13) indicating entry words and data output from the disc. The keyboard and the LCD panel are coupled together with the compact disc interface (12) to an interpretation-processing circuit (14) within the main controller (4). The process begins with the entry of a word character string that is used to access the disc. If the word is recognised the disc contents are read (15). If the word does not exist in the disc system a correction process (16) is initiated to determine if an error in word character entries has been made. A new attempt is then made to access the disc. ADVANTAGE - Allows for errors in word entry.
