N-Substd. N-chloromethyl carbamate esters ClCH2NR1COOR2 (where R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or aryl opt. substd. by alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or haloalkyl; and R2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl), useful as (i) intermediates for prodn. of plastics, plastics auxiliaries and dyes and (ii) as such, or as water-soluble quaternary derivs., as textile assistants, are prepd. quantitatively in high purity, by reacting cpds. HR1NCOOR2 with paraformaldehyde and CHl, in presence of diluents, (pref. benzene or toluene), and anhyd. alkali or alkaline earth sulphates, (pref. anhyd. Na2SO4), at -10 to +120 degrees C, pref. 15 - 70 degrees C.
