The lamp has a column shape (3) and is arranged adjacent to the laser material (1). An optical reflector (2 on the opposite side of the lamp envelope to the laser material is provided by a reflective metal coating, or a reflective metal layer integrated in the material of the lamp column. Pref. the reflector has a diffuse reflection characteristic and allows part of the light from the plasma to be reflected back in the direction of the laser rod, for re-absorbing by the plasma, to obtain a required temp. rise. ADVANTAGE - Improved efficiency of laser pumping lamp by intensifying effective light level.
