In apparatus for proportionately adding a solution to a liquid flowing in a conduit 1, the pressure-difference across a restriction 2 causes part of the flow to be by-passed through a conduit 4 into a bellows 7 the apertured base 8 of which rests on solute 9. The solution returns to conduit 1 through throttle valve 10, chamber 30, opening 26, and conduit 5, the pressuredifference across the restriction being applied also to diaphragm 14 which by means of pin 15 opens check valve 11 so long as there is flow in the conduit 1. If valve 28 be closed to stop flow in conduit 1, valve 11 also closes, to prevent outflow of additive caused by casual pressure fluctuations in conduit 1, especially if there be air in the tank 3. In a modification, (see Fig. 2, not shown) pressure in the conduit 4 is transmitted to diaphragm 14 through a dashpot device, comprising a second diaphragm (19) and a chamber (186) thereunder communicating with a chamber (17) above diaphragm 14 by means of an aperture (20); the two chambers are filled with a viscous liquid so that a time lag dependant on the viscosity is imposed on the operation of pin 15, whereby large but brief pressure fluctuations in conduit 1 fail to open valve 11. An additional relief valve (21) in the conduit 4 may be provided. The restriction 2 may consist of an annular element 2a, Fig. 3, and a disk 22 attached thereto by a resilient tab 31; at low velocity the fluid flows only through the annular space 32 whereby an effective pressure difference is maintained. |
