A door latch for use on vehicles comprises a bifurcated latch element 21 pivoted at 24 on one structure, e.g. a door of the vehicle, and having two parallel leg portions 22, 23 of which leg 22 extends radially from the pivot axis, for engagement by a keeper 14 secured to another structure, e.g. a door pillar, such engagement causing rotation of the latch element, against the force exerted by a spring surrounding pivot 24, to the full-line position wherein its other leg portion 23, which is offset from the pivot axis, engages behind the keeper and at the same time its upper end engages an abutment edge 44 of a latching detent 41. During latching, the detent swings anti-clockwise about the axis of its operating shaft 42, against the force of a spiral spring 43, until the rear corner of the upper end of leg portion 23 slips past the abutment edge 44, allowing the detent to return to its initial position where the latch element is locked by the engagement of arcuate portion 46 of leg portion 23 with edge 44. The keeper 14 comprises a pin 16 surrounded by a collar 18 of a compliant material, e.g. rubber, which is in turn encompassed by a split sleeve 19, so that the sleeve can be compressed during latching. |
